"My average keeps changing....sometimes quite a bit! Why?"
Assessment is such an important part of our daily work. Formative assessment allows us to see how we are doing and how we can improve; summative assessment allows us to see to what degree we met a certain standard on that particular day. As grades are entered, percentage averages fluctuate, sometimes quite a bit depending on the weight of the assignment or whether or not it is the first assignment in a particular unit. Did one test or assignment indicate the need for studying? Or did one essay or story bring an average way up? It is always best to look at individual assignments to see the trend over time, and ultimately to understand that grades are not simply a mathematical calculation- they are a professional decision made by your teacher to indicate how a student is doing throughout the year.
I hope that clarifies some concerns that arise as students see their grades move around with each entered assignment. For teachers, this is "nothing new" as we have always seen averages change when we enter grades; however, for parents and students, seeing this change on a daily or weekly basis is something new with the use of the online parent portal. Always talk to your teacher about any specific concerns related to assignments, but try not to let a changing average throughout the year become all-encompassing or a hindrance to the learning process. Averages are definitely important; moreso are the improvements students make over time as they learn new concepts and improve their skills.
